Our Facilitator has been in a few times, and in 2024, I have the privilege of working one-on-one with Nikki. Here are some of the discussions and examples we have been given.

Modifying

Add Alt Delete is one phrase you can use to modify a game:

  • What can we add, alter or delete
  • Such as removing a ball, altering the type of ball or adding an extra ball

SPACE is another phrase

  • Supportive Schedule and Use of Time
  • Pedagogy That Engages
  • Alternative and Authentic Assessment
  • Climate of Care
  • Education for Everyone

Integration of Literacy and Maths into PE

  • Using movement to help with learning in math
    • Scrabble - collect letters to spell the specific word
    • Countdown - consonants and vowels, 1st team get back 3 letters, 2nd team… - 2 letters: after each relay. Which team has the longest word, which team has the most points from word score
    • Fraction Tag - make a whole using the fractions
    • Number Bonds - What makes 10, 20 or Even Factors of..
    • Place Value Relay
    • Positional Freeze: in on, under, beside, opposite, adjacent, parallel third …
  • Using movement to help with literacy
    • Alphabet Hop -
    • Pop, Pop in the Pot - remake the sentence
    • Charades - Action Verbs, Positional Language,
    • Poetry - create movement to go along with text
    • Digraph Dodgeball
We also watched a video of the action and reflected on how we could all improve, taking stock of our own performance. When working with students, as teachers, we know our students and who will need more specific instructions and those who will see the problems.

HAL - Healthy Active Learning

Kia Ora,

It is wonderful to be part of this again. I started my journey with HAL a few years ago around the time of COVID. Then I changed schools and once again I was about to leave and they joined the journey.

We started with Planning for the Year looking at The focus for each term, the outcomes, the purpose of your Health and Physical Education, Achievement Objectives, lessons, skills and activities, and connections to other areas of inquiry.

Our facilitator is Nikki, is going to recap activities with a twist for us:

  • Helicopters - tag game (four helicopter pads made with cones, each pad a different colour and two taggers with noodles)
    • respectful and responsible use of noodles (if I hear a bang, not being respectful)
    • if tagged - consequence eg star jumps
    • Strategy what changes can be made to the tag - step and stretch add in tagged  movement jump noddle/ ball smaller noodles,
    • Change language (Maori, Tongan) gave get to colour, 6 pads more taggers,
    • Long run and short runs smaller pads how many in a square boundary
  • Flip the Hoop - target game,
    • STEP: Space Task Equipment People
    • Spread team apart, for younger students shorter distance - 2 or 3 games
    • Ball if on grass, bean bag, mini frisbee, tennis ball, dodgeball
    • Bucket instead of hoop, bowl into
    • Pairs if want kids to run, 3 is a good number
    • Throwing back or running back
  • End ball - the start of invasion games
    • STEP: Space Task Equipment People
When then discussed the skills students learn for target games and invasion games:

In-class support will start in Term 2 on Tuesdays
